Byles J, Feldman S & Dobson A. The art of ageing as an widowed older women in Australia. , 2006; :

Life as a widowed woman is as much a part of the normal life span for many women as are marriage and motherhood. For many women the art of ageing, therefore, involves learning to function as a woman living alone, and maintaining as high as possible levels of health and quality of life. We argue that although the status of “widow” has evolved as a stereotype with many negative connotations, the reality for many women is much more positive and rewarding. Indeed, despite their grief and specific needs, the period following the death of spouse is a time of transition, reinvention, and growth that draws heavily on women’s resilience and on the strengths of those around them.
