Has the national paid parental scheme increased the duration of breastfeeding?
Australia's first national Paid Parental Leave scheme was introduced on 1 January 2011.(1) Data on breastfeeding were collected by the ALSWH in 2009 (Survey 5) and then in 2012 (Survey 6). This provides a natural experiment in terms of national policy change. Our aim is to investigate whether the Paid Parental Leave scheme has helped to extend the mean duration of breastfeeding by comparing the duration of breastfeeding before and after its introduction.
