Depression and driving cessation in older women.
Evidence from Australian and international studies indicate that driving cessation in later life is associated with depression. However, no one to our knowledge has examined whether social support buffers the decline in mental health after driving cessation. It could be that those who develop depression after ceasing driving either a) lack a social support network or b) fail to maintain social support levels. We are looking at women at baseline (survey 3) who are driving and not depressed, and follow them through subsequent surveys to see who develops depression or not after cessation, to see if social support plays a role in mental health following driving cessation.
