Public Consultation on the refresh of the National Strategic Framework for Chronic Conditions

The Department of Health and Aged Care (Department) is undertaking an open public consultation on the refresh of the National Strategic Framework for Chronic Conditions (Framework). The Framework is the overarching policy for chronic conditions in Australia and provides guidance for the development and implementation of relevant policies, strategies, actions and services. The Framework was published in 2017 with a timeframe of eight years (2017-2025).

The Centre for Women’s Health Research (CWHR) made a submission that provided advice on the current Vision and further inclusions that should be considered in the new Framework. Using ALSWH findings, CWHR identified the complexity of managing chronic conditions, highlighting the sociodemographic and work-related challenges associated with chronic disease prevention and management. Barriers and challenges associated with accessing healthcare (e.g., gender bias, costs, geographical barriers, education) were also considered and acknowledged as obstacles to preventing equitable access to early intervention and coordinated care. The CWHR submission also discussed priority populations and identified that women who have experienced violence should be considered a vulnerable population in the new Framework.
