Assessing alcohol use in pregnant women using data from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health (ALSWH)

Synopsis

A large proportion of Australian women report drinking alcohol during pregnancy, despite guidelines promoting abstinence. The proposed project will hopefully provide a better understanding of why Australian women are drinking during pregnancy. Quantitative data from the ALSWH 1973-78 cohort will be used to examine a more comprehensive model of the predictors of prenatal alcohol consumption. Interviews with ALSWH women and focus groups with GPs will provide insight into the information pathways available to and utilised by pregnant women with regards to alcohol use. It is hoped that by gaining a better understanding of the elements that are leading to alcohol use during pregnancy, targeted interventions to address the issue can then be developed.
