The impact of pharmaceutical characteristics on the choice of treatments for osteoporosis

Synopsis

Understanding the drivers of preferences regarding drug treatment may help predict market share of future drugs. Patient-level PBS data relating to drugs used to treat osteoporosis were analysed, in combination with drug attribute data obtained from the literature. Preliminary analysis found that while most drug attributes affected preferences in the expected way, the efficacy attributes did not, which suggests that GPs opinions regarding efficacy may differ from the published literature. This limits the ability to explore preferences using observational data. Additionally, it suggests that market share predictions using efficacy obtained from the literature alone is limited, and might be augmented or replaced by a surgey of GPs opinions.
