Achieving Healthy Ageing: The Impact of Lifestyle Factors on Longevity and Health in Later Life.

Synopsis

Healthy ageing is a policy imperative for ageing populations. Ideally, current and future populations of older people will not only live longer, but with limited physical disability and reduced need for services. Health promotion across the life course is thought to be a critical step in achieving this goal of healthy ageing. In this analysis, we examine factors associated with survival and maintenance of good, very good or excellent self rated health among 12431 women in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health who were born in 1921-26. The factors of interest are baseline age, education, marital status, self-reported conditions, smoking, BMI, physical activity, moderate consumption of alcohol.
