Causes of vasomotor menopausal symptoms in midlife

Synopsis

Limited evidence suggests associations between vasomotor menopausal symptoms (VMS), that is hot flushes and night sweats, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in later life, but the causal pathway is unclear. For instance, it is not clear if pre-existing risk factors, that is prior to VMS, explain these findings. Little is known about whether there are early CVD risk factors that predict VMS. Our objective is to elucidate the associations between pre-existing CVD risk factors and the development of VMS later in life. Findings will lead to a better understanding of the aetiology of VMS.
