The development of iron deficiency in Australian women

Synopsis

This project aims to determine the strongest dietary and lifestyle predictors of iron deficiency for women of childbearing age. While total iron intake seems to have little bearing on iron status, meat intake and haem iron intake seem to be important. Other factors that have shown a relationship to iron status include dietary phytates, tannins, calcium and alcohol, and exercise, dieting, parity, smoking and menstrual blood loss. Very little Australian research has been done in this area; the work has mostly been cross sectional with small sample sizes. The ALSWH provides the opportunity to examine this issue longitudinally with a large representative cohort.
