Vasomotor menopausal symptoms and risk of cardiovascular disease

Synopsis

Limited evidence suggests associations between vasomotor menopausal symptoms (VMS), that is hot flushes and night sweats, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in later life, but the causal pathway is unclear. For instance, it is not clear if pre-existing risk factors, that is prior to VMS, explain these findings. We will elucidate the associations between VMS and subsequent CVD outcomes, while adjusting for prior CVD risk factors. We will use data of the mid-age ALSWH cohort. CVD cases will be based on self-report and on linked hospital admissions data. Findings will have implications for preventive healthcare in women.
