The characteristics of Australian women who consult with a midwife

Synopsis

In Australia, 99% of women who give birth do so in a public or private hospital or birth centre or at home and it is likely that all these women have a midwife in attendance. It is likely that many women have midwives providing care or advice through pregnancy. However, we know little about the characteristics of the women who use midwifery services and the proportion of women who access midwives. It would be useful to provide some basic information as well about the services provided by midwives and the impact of any policy changes related to midwifery during the period 2006-2009.
