Statin use and adverse outcomes

Synopsis

Statins are medications that lower cholesterol levels and risk of cardiovascular events in patients with cardiovascular disease. They are commonly used in mid-aged and older adults with medium to high risk of cardiac events. Recently there have been reports suggesting these medications may be associated with adverse outcomes such as diabetes, infectious diseases, cancer, muscular problems, and acute renal failure. We plan to investigate these potential associations in the mid and older cohorts of the Australian Longitudinal Study of Women’s Health.
