Physical activity, pain medication and (joint) pain in women with arthritis

Synopsis

Chronic joint pain and stiffness, the cardinal symptoms of arthritis, are a major cause of disability and reduced quality of life. Both physical activity and pain medication are recommended for pain management in people with arthritis. However, little is known about the combined effects of physical activity and pain medication on pain in people with arthritis. The aim of this study is to examine (1) whether physical activity is associated with a reduction in pain; (2) whether pain medication is associated with a reduction in pain; (3) whether physical activity reduces the need for pain medication; (4) the relative contributions of physical activity and pain medication to pain in women with arthritis.
