Effect of weight and physical activity on incident hypertension

Synopsis

Persuasive evidence suggests that both obesity and physical inactivity are risk factors for the development of hypertension. However, there is little research on whether physical activity ameliorates the effect of weight on hypertension risk. We will therefore investigate relationships between each of BMI and physical activity, and risk of hypertension. Furthermore, we will study the joint association of BMI and physical activity to determine if physical activity reduces or eliminates the adverse effect of elevated weight on hypertension risk. Findings will have public health implications with respect to recommendations for prevention of hypertension.
