Widowhood and mental health

Synopsis

The death of a spouse is one of the most distressing life course experiences and this becomes increasingly common with advancing age. Declines in mental health have been reported in the post bereavement period, however few studies have examined mental health trajectories before and after bereavement. This study will focus on changes in mental health that occur in the period prior to widowhood and subsequent to widowhood, so will track the women’s adaptation to loss.
