Dietary iron and haem iron intakes among women of reproductive age from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health.

Synopsis

Among women of reproductive age, iron deficiency is particularly prevalent and associated with increased fatigue, decreased work performance, impaired resistance to infection, and for pregnant women, poor tolerance to heavy blood loss and surgical interventions at delivery. This project will examine survey data collected from the 1973-78 cohort including self-reported dietary data from 2003 and 2009, linked with data from the Perinatal Data Collection and the Admitted Patients Data Collection from NSW, QLD and WA. The proposed study aims to examine the association between dietary iron and haeme iron intakes and pregnancy and birth outcomes.
