Effect of depression on recovery after knee and hip joint replacement surgery.

Synopsis

Knee or hip joint replacement surgery can provide improved function and relief of pain for patients with severe joint diseases such as osteoarthritis. On average, 50-80% improvements in function have been observed up to 2 years after surgery, but the effects of surgery on the longer term are unclear. Also, not everyone seems to benefit to the same extend; particularly mental health problems have been suggested to limit post-surgery improvements. The aim of this study is to examine the long-term consequences (up to 9 years) of knee or hip joint replacement surgery on physical and mental wellbeing over time in mid-age and older women, and to explore the effect of pre-surgery mental health on post-surgery benefits.
