The STEP consortium: Strategies for Early Prevention of falls in middle-aged adults

Synopsis

Falls are a well-known cause of injuries among those aged 65 years and older. Approximately 1 in 3 older adults have a fall at least once per year. Most research has focused on falls in older adults (i.e. over the age of 65), however little attention has been given to the increased risk of falls in middle-aged adults, which may guide earlier intervention and subsequently a reduction in falls later in life. The aim is to examine risk factors of falls in middle-aged adults using data from four existing cohort studies from Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
