Dental health in Australia – assessing the participatory, utilisation and health outcomes of the Chronic Disease Dental Scheme.

Synopsis

With calls to expand Medicare to include dental services and the noted fiscal costs associated with such an expansion, it is important to understand what the outcomes might be. The addition of the Chronic Disease Dental Scheme (CDDS) on Medicare between 2007 and 2013 represented an expansion of public health insurance to cover dental services for those with a chronic disease. This study will seek to identify the drivers of program participation and whether the CDDS increased the utilisation of dental services for the intended population. This study is important to informing future policy in relation to any proposed universal dental health scheme.
