Jirojwong S & Manderson L. Physical health, life style and preventive health behaviours: What are the implications for health care for immigrants? , 1999; :

The majority of Thai women and Filipinas are recent migrants who migrate to Australia as a result of marriage. They are healthier than Australian born women which is partly due to the screening of self selection process. The unexpected high proportion of Thai women who smoke and drink are influenced by personal sociodemographic factors rather than immigration per se. Some women may have taken up these behaviours as they perceived them as socially acceptable life styles in Australia, others use them to reduce psychological problems. Low use of Pap smear screening and barriers in using health care services among these immigrants are health concerns which health care personnel can play significant roles in addressing these problems.
