Physical activity, sitting time and BMI: relationships with health care services, medicines, and health costs over 20 years in young and mid-age Australian women

Synopsis

Physical activity levels vary during the life course. However, most previous studies assessed physical activity in a single time point. This study consists of three parts: 1) the association of CUMULATIVE physical activity and sitting time with chronic diseases, mortality and medical and pharmaceutical costs, and 2) their JOINT associations of physical activity and sitting time with chronic diseases, mortality and medical and pharmaceutical costs in young, mid-aged, and older women. This study examines whether trajectories of physical activity in the earlier years predict health conditions in later life among Australian women. The results will inform the development of health promotion strategies which may reduce health care costs and chronic disease risk in the long term.
