Applying computational stylistics to the words women use
The researchers will analyse patterns in the use of words in the free text comments which some respondents add in response to a question at the end of the survey. The aim is to identify broad common changes in attitudes which correspond to different life stages, such that beyond the expected individual variation it is possible to see shared transitions. Work with other kinds of written text has shown that multivariate statistical procedures like Principal Components Analysis isolate underlying factors which correspond to recognisable general contrasts, similarities and trends in the motivations of the language users, and in this project these methods will be applied to this very large collection of comments.
