Hormone therapy and mortality in the mid-aged ALSWH cohort.
Hormone therapy has been used by women experiencing menopause for symptomatic relief of symptoms and for prevention of cardiovascular disease. The use of this treatment has declined over recent years after clinical trials showed it may increase risk of stroke and blood clots and not protect for cardiovascular disease. However subgroup analysis in the Women's Health Initiative Estrogen-Alone trial has shown women aged 50-59 with surgical menopause may be protected from cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. We wish to test this hypothesis in the mid-aged ALSWH cohort.
