The role of the dietary inflammatory index in the development of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes
Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes are pregnancy complications occurring in 8½% and 7% of women in the young cohort, respectively. Mothers with these complications and their children are at increased risk of adverse health outcomes during and after pregnancy. We previously found that women with a Mediterranean diet had a lower risk of both complications. In this study we aim to further explore why the Mediterranean diet may be protective. We examine to what extent the association between higher consumption of foods in the Mediterranean diet and lower risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes can be explained by the anti-inflammatory content of the Mediterranean diet.
